OUR WORK

CEI connects smallholder farmers and rural business owners in Haiti to resources needed to build sustainable social enterprises and cooperatives. We provide trainings and start-up costs both through direct investments and micro-loans aimed at developing local expertise and a viable economic base. Current Programs include Goat, Agriculture, and Women’s Business.

At CEI we believe in authentic engagement that invites transparency and innovative thinking, where there are no wrong answers, we’re open to all possibilities, and willing to risk failure and to start again. We facilitate cultural exchange programs, internships, and residencies to bring Haitians, Americans, and others together to share their stories, talents, skills, dreams, and challenges.

Research shows that the arts are among the most important and valuable ways we can improve learning and help people cope with life’s challenges. That’s why, when a Haitian community asked CEI to provide a music program for adults and children, we agreed. After Hurricane Matthew we asked whether the community preferred us to divert funds to disaster response. They said they needed music more than ever in times of trauma. The music program stayed.

Radio and other media in the developing world can save lives during times of disaster and, in good times, provide training, information, education, and entertainment. Even fiction-based programing can be used to address social issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, restavek freedom, and health and sanitation.. CEI is currently developing partnerships to bring this programming to isolated rural areas in Haiti.

The UN estimates that about 10% of global disease could be prevented by improving water supply and management of resources, and by the improved hygiene and sanitation that would allow. Reliable access to clean water in rural Haiti would reduce illness, suffering, and deaths while improving agricultural yields, income, and nutrition. Water is essential to life. CEI is currently embarking on a program to meet this critical need.
